We are Not the Heroes of Your Birth Story—From a Las Vegas Doula

A gentle message from a Las Vegas Doula on a little thing called "The Savior Mentality"

(Inspiration from Brooke Collier and Lauren Hall—Hearthmother Journey)

As an extension of the last blog post—“You’re Not a Coffee Shop”

🌱This Isn’t Our Story—And That’s the Point

It’s important to find the right fit in your birth team.

Yes, sometimes there’s a deep peace that settles in when the connection is real.

When your body exhales. When your spirit knows, “This is right.”

But let’s be clear: that peace isn’t always because of your doula, midwife, or birthkeeper.

It’s not about their vibe or their skillset alone. It’s about resonance coming from your nervous system. And resonance is sacred, but it’s also nuanced.

Because the truth is, peace doesn’t mean perfection. A good fit doesn’t mean someone checks every box or mirrors all your beliefs. It simply means there is alignment—something flows.

You feel safe.

You feel seen.

And that experience? That’s not because your birth worker is magical. It’s because your intuition is active. It’s because God is leading you. It’s because your nervous system is whispering, “Yes. This feels right.”

And that’s the whole point.

🕯️This Isn’t Our Story

As doulas, midwives, or birth guardians, we show up with loving hands and open hearts. We bring knowledge, prayer, tools, and presence.

But we are not the authors of your birth story.

This story isn’t about us

.Your choices are not ours to shape.

Your baby is not ours to deliver.

Your voice is not ours to speak over.

We may offer perspective, wisdom, and support. But our main role is to remind you:

You already carry the map. Our job is just to walk beside you as you follow it.

🌊We’re Not Saviors. We’re Witnesses.

There’s a subtle narrative in the world of birth work—and in many helping professions—that whispers:

"If you just say the right thing or show up the right way, you can fix it. You can save her from trauma, pain, or loss."

But that’s a lie. It’s a seductive one. And it leads to burnout, disillusionment, and control.

Because here’s the truth:

We are not saviors.

We are not solutions.

We are not the special ingredient that makes birth “go well.”

We are steady hands.

We are mirrors when you forget your strength.

We are gentle reminders and ropes to hold when the waves get big.

But you are the one doing the work. You are the one carrying the wisdom. You are the one entrusted by God with this birth.

🩺Birth Is Not Meant to Be Managed or Controlled

The urge to control birth often comes from fear—fear of what could go wrong, fear of not being needed, fear of not getting the outcome we hoped for.

But when we try to script birth, persuade a mother, or push a preferred path, we rob her of what is most sacred: her sovereignty.

Birth isn’t ours to direct. It isn’t ours to mold. It doesn’t always go “our way”—and it’s not supposed to.

Our work is not to force clarity or perfection, but to create space.

Space for truth to rise.

Space for God to move.

Space for intuition to lead.

✨The Real Work: Pointing Her Back to Herself

When we sit beside a laboring woman, we are not there to shape her story—we are there to guard the space where she can hear her own voice.

We are not here to convince. We are not here to override. We are not here to empower her with our strength.

We are here to remind her of her own, already placed within her by a loving God.

We bring options, wisdom, tools, and presence. But we do not take the lead. We honor her timing, her instincts, her knowing.

Because this is her rite of passage. Not ours.

🤎In Closing

Birth work done well isn’t showy or loud.

It’s quiet. Attentive. Respectful. It flows from a place of trust—trust in the body, in the mother, in the process, and God.

So if you’re reading this as a mother seeking a birth worker, or as a birth worker reflecting on your journey (as we all must do), remember:

When it flows, it’s not because of our power.

When there’s peace, it’s not because we’re the hero.

It’s because something divine is aligning. It’s because you are strong, seen, and safe.

And maybe the best birth workers are simply the ones who know how to step back, hold sacred space, and point you gently back to your own knowing, again and again.
